Spinal Decompression Therapy

Tingling hands, numb feet, weakened arm or leg muscles, neck or back pain – these and other symptoms can slam the brakes on your quality of life, severely limiting your activities and making each day an agonizing struggle. Traditional medical approaches include major surgery to remove parts of your spinal anatomy and make other permanent alterations that may or may not provide lasting relief.

Here at Fraum Center for Restorative Health, we urge patients suffering from spinal and neurological problems to seek conservative care first. That’s one reason we’re proud to offer non-surgical spinal decompression therapy to the Hilton Head Island area.

“I noticed the immediate decrease of pain”

I am happy there is an alternative treatment to help me with my compressed disc. I am fearful of the cortisone shot that was the option from the orthopedic doctor and surgery in the future.

During my first visit I had treatment with the decompression machine. I noticed the immediate decrease of pain. I was able to walk out of the office standing up right. I came in hunched over! I look forward to continued treatment and getting healthy.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

The spinal column is an elegant, complex structure in which vertebrae, vertebral discs and facet joints are positioned alongside the spinal cord and its major nerve roots, which relay all the sensory and motor signals between the brain and the rest of the body.

The downside of this arrangement is the fact that a misalignment in these spinal structures can easily put pressure on the adjacent nerve tissues. Bulging discs flattened out by age/dehydration and herniated discs (whose torn casings allow the gelatinous inner material to extrude) are common examples.

These disc problems cause both local and referred pain. Flattened discs can strain the small facet joints that articulate the spinal column, while a herniation can cause significant pain in the back or neck. Impingement of nerve roots in the cervical spine may cause cervical radiculopathy, in which the upper extremities experience pain, tingling, weakness or loss of sensation.

Sciatica causes similar agonies in the lower extremities due to impingement of the sciatic nerve. The errant disc may also put the squeeze on the spinal cord itself, a problem known as spinal stenosis.

There are many types and causes of back pain which we can address with our methods:

  • Annular Tear
  • Bulging Disc
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Disc Extrusion

  • Disc Protrusion
  • Herniated Disc
  • Spinal Stenosis

It works on the principle of flexion-distraction force. Tiny amounts of such force are employed to pull the afflicted area outward, causing negative pressure to form between vertebrae. This draws bulging or herniated discs back toward their regular position in the center of the spinal column – and away from those sensitive nerves. This effect also infuses bulging discs with fluids, restoring normal spinal height and relieving facet joint stress.

Spinal decompression therapy is safe, effective, painless and easy – all you have to do is lie comfortably on our state-of-the-art decompression table. This sophisticated, computer-driven apparatus is pre-programmed with multiple setting to ensure that you receive the right degree of decompression and disc rehydration. Repeated sessions are combined with corrective exercises that strengthen and reinforce the “new normal” for your spinal column.

Advanced Technology: Introducing the DRX9000® Table

We use the latest technology to help relieve the effects of back pain due to herniated and degenerated discs and beyond.

Think of it this way-the discs in our spine are constantly under under weight-bearing pressure, making them slow to heal naturally if at all. Our table gently “stretches” your spine, helping to relieve pressure and product effective, quicker healing. This is what’s known as disc decompression. Here’s how it works:

First, you’ll lay down on our DRX9000® table. Then, very gently, your spine will be stretched, then relaxed. We’ll repeat this as needed for best results. Patients sometimes wonder if this is painful-we’re here to let you know that it’s absolutely not. In fact, many patients find it relaxing and pleasant. The table is extremely gentle and merely aims to reduce pressure on your discs while allowing them to receive the nourishment necessary for proper healing.
