Meet Heather Hinshelwood, MD, FACEP

Dr. Heather HinshelwoodDr. H, as she is known, became a doctor to meet people’s most basic needs in life and death situations. What appeals to her most about being a physician is the opportunity to heal and intervene at the most critical time in a person’s life on this earth. “It is the ultimate act of servitude.”

The most challenging aspect of being a doctor for Dr. H is wading through expectations to get to the heart of the matter—to hear what a patient is trying to tell her, to look past the distractors and see the underlying disease and the impact on a patient’s health.

Education and Experience

Despite being a die-hard Florida State Seminole (she earned a BS in Exercise Physiology there), Dr. H attended the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville and then the University of Florida Shands Jacksonville for emergency medicine residency. “Despite the rivalries, I am so grateful to all the institutions that trained me. I have had a stellar education.” A highlight of her education was having a Navy Seal ask her for help.

Dr. H’s experience has included serving as an emergency medicine physician practicing at Colleton Medical Center and Coastal Carolina Hospital. She also is a Navy reservist and just made Commander (O5).

A Passion for Helping Others Stay Healthy

As a proponent of healthy living, Dr. H is passionate about influencing friends, family and patients to make healthier choices to improve their lives. She believes that there are no amount of drugs and interventions that can reverse the corrosive effects of obesity, inactivity and substance misuse.

“I advocate healthy (not drastic) approaches to eating and staying active. I truly believe there is no reason why everyone can’t be physically active.”

Enjoying a Full Life in Hilton Head Island

Outside the practice, Dr. H enjoys spending time with her husband and their two children. She’s also an avid CrossFitter. One of her greatest passions is scuba diving. As a PADI rescue diver, she has been diving all over the world.

Her favorite dive is in Okinawa, Japan—a spot off the Sunabe seawall on the southwestern shore called the Junkyard. “The water is warm and crystal clear. You can see for miles. And it’s just unending coral reefs with unbelievable sea life. Hanging out at 40 feet for an hour watching fish and reefs is one of my favorite things to do.”
